I don't like the word Mother. I prefer Mom. Maybe because my mom had me call her Mother, and she called her mom, Mother. Any way most of us say Mom when refering to the woman that gave birth to us. There are other ways of saying Mother. In England it is usually Mum, which my sisters picked up somewhere when they were still at home before we knew it was common in England. My niece says Mum or Mummy. It was common to call our Mothers "Ma" back in the old west. And Mama is common, also.
It may have come from an old English word 'modor', or 'moder', and seems to mean 'from whom one is decended', or at least that is what I was able to find on the internet.
Regardless of the what we call our Mom's or what the orginal meaning was they are the ones that do the most thankless job of anyone. So today I want to thank all the women of the world who have given birth to all the children, including myself.

ReplyDeleteI agree. Mother just seems so formal. And if you're close to your Mother, the names Mum, Mommy, Mom, or Mama just seem like more endearing titles for the woman who loves and cares so much about you.
