Happy Birthday New Mexico

My state of New Mexico is now 100 years old. And it still bugs me that there are so many people in the United States that can not get it through their thick heads that there is a state called New Mexico, and that we are not part of the country of Mexico which is to the south of us. New Mexico became the 47th state on January 6, 1912, with President William Taft signing the paperwork to make New Mexico a state. Before that New Mexico was a territory from 1848 when the state was taken from Mexico by U.S. troops during the Mexican War.
