I have an old computer and printer that I wanted to recycle and keep them out of the landfill. On checking who would take them, I found that my local garbage company and landfill doesn't take them. I did find that several electric stores in Albuquerque do but they charge you $10 for each item, and that would be on top of the gas to go the 50 miles to the store and return home. Althought most do take other things as keyboards, and mice for free. (I wonder if they want my live four legged mice that run around and squeek.) I do have several phone stores near by that will take the old ccell phones I have.
So is it any wonder that so many of the unwanted electrics wind up in the landfill or tossed out on the desert, and some even on the dirt roads near my home?

I hear ya! We always give our old stuff to our son and let HIM dispose of it (he usually gives it to his friends)...There is a recycling place up in the mountains that DOES take old computers, but that's 35 miles away from us!
ReplyDeleteOne thing you might want to think about before recycling your computer is if you have ever entered any personal information on it that you wouldn't want to fall into the wrong hands. Even though it may have been deleted, the right person with the right equipment can pull that information up and use it for their own perposes. As for monitors and the rest that goes along with it, perhaps a good will store would take it.
ReplyDeletewe have a recycling program here in Cuyhoga county they do that once a year.. they advise you to destory the hard drive before you bring it in. the best way to do that is open the computer up remove the hard drive and smash it wtih a coupld of heave hammer blows. plus it is a good way to vent you frustration.
